The whole family surprised my grandparents with a party tonight. It was complete with a band and food! We showed up at their front door singing love songs and they both started crying. It's their 57th anniversary.
After we all composed ourselves I performed a vow renewal ceremony. I gave them the opportunity to express their love in front their entire family. My 80 year old grandma said to my very sick 76 year old grandpa words I'll never forget. "I've loved every moment of these years. It hasn't felt like 57 because it feels like the day we were married. You've always been you, even as we've aged and now you're sick, you've always been you and I love you. Now I'm excited because whether you go first or I do, I know in heaven we're getting the crowns we worked so hard for"
Now THAT'S romance and that's some true hope too! I'm so grateful for pillars of strength like them in our family. My wife and I have a stronger marriage because of them. May we have that very same crown-based hope so that we can endure like they have.
beautiful!
